What’s the difference between all-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive?
4WD is not on all the time, under normal conditions, only the rear wheels drive the vehicle forward, while the front wheels spin freely. To activate a modern four-wheel drive system, the driver has to push a button or pull a lever to engage it. But four-wheel drive isn’t meant to be on all the time so you have to know when to turn it on and when to turn it off.
AWD is on all the time, and mostly used in cars, and the computer manages the system. Just going down the highway, the system will send most of the power to the rear wheels, for maximum fuel efficiency, if the road condition changes, such as rain or snow, the system adapts and evenly distributes the power evenly to all 4 wheels, so you have maximum drive grip, with little to no chance of wheel spin.
2WD Cars are less complex than those with AWD or 4WD, and their simpler drivetrains mean improved fuel economy in the long run.
In general, cars equipped with 2-wheel drive get better gas mileage than models that use all-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.
Thanks for watching

I love my AWD Subaru Outback, I just hate the poor fuel performance in suburb driving. it has been fully serviced recently, carbon clean, oil, filters, plugs etc. just cannot seem to get better than 350-375 klms per 60 Ltr tank.
You’re talking about intelligent awd not symmetrical
I get 600ks around town and 700ks Highway driving in my '06 manual Forester . You really do have to address your aggressive stopping and accelerating .
Its undisputed that Subaru Symmetrical AWD is superior to all 4×4 or other AWD
I had to add to the on going arguments here about what's really 4wd. I won't get into which is better as I've owned both, and each has its pros/cons, and each serves a purpose. That being said, there is only one vehicle that is truly 4wd from the factory ( I know the Jeep Rubicon is also an option, but the one I will mention comes in no other configuration) and that is the HMMWV also called the Humvee. The Humvee has a locking center differential (242 transfer case) and Torsen front and rear differentials. The Torsen diff allows torque to be applied to all 4 wheels all the time, while also allowing the vehicle to turn around corners like a open diff vehicle. As long as 1wheel on a Humvee has traction the vehicle will move forward/backward. Again a Jeep Rubicon is also a true 4wd vehicle, but that is an optioned up Jeep. An HMMWV didn't come in any other configuration drivetrain wise other than 4wd. Sorry to be that guy, but I go off of facts, not personal opinion/preference.
Calm demeanor, clear explanation. Great, thanks!
This video shows more of a lack of knowledge about multiple wheel drive systems………
You had a 1994 galant with a V6 AKA a 94 Galant VR-4, VR-4 means 4WD not front wheel. You compared the gas economy of a sports rally sedan with 4wd and an SUV with AWD………. to be fair your 94 galant is the only galant model with 4WD and is the lancer evo prototype.
I have a Subaru with 4wd
The biggest problem at a Canadian mall is spotting which Outback is yours.
AWD sucks! I cannot stand the racket of the spare spinning 🤪
Yeah, 3 differentials and anti slip.
Awd is junk
chevy trax AWD acts like 4wd. The chevy is 2 wheel drive most of the time, but when it shift it trigger the rear wheel to turn on (like traction control get triggered on) and is awd. Ir doesn't need to be shifted from 4wd to 2w drive. So it is a hybrid on these 2 system and save on gas.
because subarus sip more than a russian

This Subaru looks well
My jeep got stuck in mud pulled it out with my wifes horse.
People secretly laugh at guys in Subarus. They don’t get the joke.
Normal Now on ev car
I have a 2020 will get back to you great vid!
Get a Sub.
Lack of technical information.
But your fuel comparison is nice
I love the scenery your car visited and i too want to visit such places. Some with white snow others with dirty mud. What a combination. Your speech is also sweet.
Make more videos on other cars.
Thanks for sharing this amazing video in you tube.
Its scenery boosted my mind
.
What about XWD?
Change to Xv crosstrek disel.
WRRRRROOONNNNGGGG!!!!!
The video failed to mention the main difference between part-time 4×4 and full-time AWD. When a 4×4 turns, the front axle tracks a slightly longer path than the rear axle. This creates conflict in the transfer case.
Years ago, I was driving my Isuzu Trooper off road and had the part time 4×4 engaged. When I turned onto a paved road, the vehicle just STOPPED. The transfer case had jammed and I couldn't take it out of 4×4 mode. I had to back up along the SAME track I had entered the road on and that freed up the transfer case.
A full-time AWD has a differential between the front and read axle to allow for this difference. So it can be driven with the AWD engaged all the time. When a part-time 4×4 is in off road conditions (snow, dirt, mud), there is enough slippage to allow for the difference between the front and read axle without a differential. However, if you drive a part-time 4×4 on dry pavement at high speed with the 4×4 engaged, there is no slippage. You could lose control and crash.
The producers of this video didn't know how this works.
Not true awd only rear wheels rotate till they lose traction then the front start rotating
Excellent video! 🤴
becuse i dont have a real car 🙁
i actualy watched this becuse i was building a car in beamng
4WD has 2 shifter
AWD only has 1
done
Haldex forever. AWD and 4WD are very stupid system's.
what makes car thirstier
– petrol instead of diesel
– AWD over 2WD
– boxier design
– more weight
– more aggresive driving style
i think your subie is like that because SUV's are heavier than sedans
is the engine petrol or diesel ?
It basically means the same thing just people refer to 4WD as cars that are not always in 4WD & can be changed manually by the driver however AWD can not. This is a stupid video you don't spin tires because your car wants to its because you are losing traction and if that's the case, go slower around corners.
FULL time 4WD is this correct answer.
